Hülya BAYIR

Dr. Hülya Bayır is a Professor of Critical Care Medicine and Endowed Chair of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Research at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Bayır is a practicing physician-scientist. She obtained her MD degree from Hacettepe University in Türkiye. After her internship at Hacettepe Children’s Hospital she finished her residency in Pediatrics at Stony Brook University in New York, USA. She then completed Pediatric Critical Care and Shertz fellowships at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She became a faculty in the Department of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh in 2003. Dr. Hülya Bayır’s research focuses on the primary themes of mitochondrial injury and oxidative stress in critical illness. She has organized a multidisciplinary team of investigators to study novel approaches to the treatment of mitochondrial dysfunction by targeting oxidative stress. Her laboratory integrates the work of clinical and basic science researchers. Dr. Bayır has over 160 papers in peer reviewed journals including publications in Cell, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Cell Biology and Nature Chemistry among others.
